Kamehameha ace honored

Kamehameha Schools pitching ace Jason Kaanoi has been named the Gatorade Hawaii High School Player of the Year.

The senior right-hander, who led the Warriors to this year's Interscholastic League of Honolulu title, joins winners from 45 other states and the District of Columbia now eligible for national Player of the Year honors.

Kaanoi, whose fastball has been clocked at 96 mph, is projected as a third- to fifth-round selection in the upcoming major league draft.

Hannemann hoops finale

The seventh annual Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree, showcasing Hawaii's top female players at all levels, winds up with six games starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Iolani School.

The featured prep all-star championship game, with each team supplemented by two or three former college players, is scheduled for 3 p.m.

There is no admission charge but donations to the Gender Equity Sports Club will be welcome.

Beach doubles tomorrow

The SMACK Sportswear Hawaii State Co-Ed Beach Doubles Championships start tomorrow at 9 a.m. with pool play at the Queen's Surf Beach Sand Box.

Registration is at 8:15 a.m. Cost is $10 in advance, $15 tomorrow.
