New phone books
picture bygone era

By Dennis Oda, Star-Bulletin
Kauai resident James Hoyle holds the Hawaiian Tel
directory for 2000-2001 that features his artwork on
its cover. Warren Haruki, president of GTE Hawaiian
Tel, stands beside the original painting, "Camp II,
Wahiawa Suns." They unveiled the artwork yesterday
at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Hoyle, called the
"Gauguin of Hawaii," says his painting captures a
significant cultural period in Hawaii's history.
Distribution of the new books begins next
Friday on Oahu.
