Hapuna’s Carll takes
assistant pro golf title

Kevin Carll of the Hapuna Golf Course won the Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship with a 36-hole score of 142 after a final-round 72 at the Ko Olina Golf Club yesterday.

Ko Olina's Brad Buck shot the day's best round, a 3-under 69, to finish in a tie for second place at 143 with Makena's Kirk Nelson and Lance Taketa of the Hilo Municipal Course.

The victory was worth $1,000 to Carll, who qualified for the National Assistant Pro Championships Oct. 26-29 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Garcia, Carroll to tangle

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia will take on 1983-84 ASP world champion Tom Carroll of Australia in round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro Fiji 2000 when it resumes tomorrow, surf and weather conditions permitting, at Tavarua Island, Fiji.

Competition was called off today because of windy, messy conditions.

Carroll, 38, blitzed Jake Paterson yesterday. The 30 year-old Garcia advanced earlier.

In another highly anticipated third-round clash, defending world and Quiksilver Pro Fiji champion Mark Occhilupo of Australia will go against six-time world champ Kelly Slater of Florida.

Hawaii's Shane Dorian and Ross Williams will face Richard Lovett of Australia and Flavio Padaratz of Brazil, respectively. Kalani Robb and Shawn Sutton of Hawaii were second-round casualties yesterday.

Special games to begin

The Oahu leg of the First Hawaiian Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run winds up tomorrow with a procession into Rainbow Stadium at about 7 p.m. to officially open the Special Olympic Summer Games. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m.

Competition begins tomorrow at 11 a.m., at the University of Hawaii Lecture Hall with a powerlifting contest.

Wahine volleyball tickets

The renewal deadline for University of Hawaii women's volleyball season ticket holders is tomorrow. Renewals to the UH Ticket Office should be postmarked tomorrow.

Strongmen at All-Star Cafe

The All-Star Cafe will host the World Rolling Thunder Championship today at 5 p.m.

The competition is open to anyone who wants to challenge World Strongman competitors. First-place winners win $500.

There are still openings for youngsters interested in attending the Rainbow Summer baseball Camp or the UH Rainbow Wahine Basketball Camp.

USGA Junior qualifying

The entry deadline is June 7 for the USGA Junior Championship qualifying rounds at the Waikoloa Beach Resort June 29-30.

Qualifying play will start at 6:30 a.m. each day.

Senior tennis deadline

June 16 is the deadline to enter the June 24-25 Oahu Public Parks Seniors tennis tournament at Diamond Head Tennis Center.

There will be singles and doubles play for men and women ages 30-80.

Maui to host youth track

Maui will host the second annual Hawaii Youth National Track and Field Invitational June 24-25.

The meet is for youth athletes ages 6-18.

In conjunction with the meet, Olympic Development events featuring world class athletes from around the world will also be held, according to meet director Rudy Huber.

Smith wins cycling title

Michele Ming Shan Smith, a graduate student at Tufts University, won the final sprint to claim the Stars and Stripes national championship jersey at the national Collegiate Cycling Association Championships, May 12-14 at Athens, Ohio.

The Honolulu resident's win came in Division 2 for schools with fewer than 15,000 students.

Smith was the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference women's champion for the 2000 season.
