Hall of Honor named

State champions Victoria Chang and Erin Hoe were among the 12 senior student-athletes chosen for the Nissan Hawaii High School Hall of Honor Class of 2000.

Chang, a national-caliber distance runner from Punahou, was undefeated in during her prep career. Hoe was also undefeated during her tennis career at Mililani, winning an unprecedented four state singles title.

Also named yesterday were: Mililani's Vera Simms, winner of five gold medals at the state track meet; Mitzi Ing of Iolani, the Star-Bulletin's Pitcher of the Year in softball who led the Raiders to two state titles; and Kealani Kimball of Kamehameha, who has been a key part of five state championships for the Warriors - three in volleyball and two in basketball.

Four multisport athletes who have committed to play football for the University of Hawaii were also selected. They are: Chad Kapanui of Roosevelt, Kamehameha's Houston Ala, and St. Louis duo Timmy Chang and Gerald Welch.

Rounding out the class are three neighbor island athletes: Kauai's Brad Lum-Tucker, a five-sport athlete who won the state boys' singles tennis title this month; Christian Casco, another multisport athlete who won two state wrestling titles; and Hilo's Jason Mandaquit, the Star-Bulletin's Mr. Hawaii Basketball who led the Vikings to the boys' state title earlier this year.

The 12 will each receive a $2,000 scholarship and a Hall of Honor ring.

Olympic diving medalist Keala O'Sullivan Watson will be the guest speaker at the June 4 awards banquet at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Kong, Leong
4-ball victors

The team of Gary Kong and Kala'e Leong defeated Kendall Fukumoto and Michael Ukauka, 5-4, yesterday at Ewa Villages Golf Course in the Championship Flight final of the Francis Brown 4-Ball Tournament.

Wes Teruya and Bryant Akisada captured A Flight honors and Leighton Uyeda and Matt DeMello were the B Flight champs.

Takata, Pellow prevail

Greg Takata downed Ko Dericks, 7-6, 6-1, and Ann Pellow beat Chloe Bihag, 6-3, 6-2, for the men's and women's singles titles in the Hawaiian Open Championships yesterday at Diamond Head Tennis Center.

Delgado polo standout

Sam Delgado scored all the goal for the Beachcomber Realty team in its 5-5 polo tie with Hula Prints yesterday at Waimanalo. Rosey Rosecrans had three goals and Gordon Smith two for Hula Prints.

Maglangit back on top

Alfred Maglangit's Chevy-powered dragster won the Super Comp class title - third event of the 10-month Budweiser Gold Cup Series - at Hawaii Raceway Park Saturday night, putting himself back on top in the 2000 season points chase.

Sprint car win for Joseph

Stoney Joseph roared to his third Sprint Car victory of the Summer Sizzle season Saturday night at Hawaii Motor Speedway.

With the win, Joseph climbed within 30 points of series leader Deno Freitas, who finished third in Saturday's event.
