UH’s Degen signs
pro softball contract

University of Hawaii slugger Dana Degen has signed a free-agent contract with the Ohio Pride of the Women's Professional Softball League.

If she lands a spot on the Ohio roster, Degen will become the first UH Wahine to play professionally.

Degen, the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished her senior season in style, hitting .401 with nine home runs and 36 runs batted in.

Hannemann hoopla

The seventh annual Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree, showcasing the islands' top female players, tips off tomorrow with a 16-team preliminary tournament at the University of Hawaii Gym 1 beginning at 10 a.m.

There is no admission fee but donations are welcome, with proceeds to benefit the sponsoring Gender Equity Sports Club.

The tournament will wind up on May 27, at Iolani Gym, with the first game starting at 10 a.m.

Kala Kukea canoe fest

The Hui Nalu Canoe Club will present the Kala Kukea Ironman Challenge Sunday on Maunalua Bay.

The fund-raising event, dedicated to the memory of a key Hui Nalu leader for more than 25 years, will feature six- and one-man canoe races, surf-ski races and age-group paddling.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. Entry fees are $15 for adult paddlers and $10 for age-group paddlers.

The fees cover race participant T-shirts, medals for the top three crews in each division and lunch.

BMX championship race

The Bicycle Motocross State Championship Race is scheduled for tomorrow at the Wheeler Army Air Force BMX track.

Sign-ups begin at 2 p.m., followed by racing at 3:30 p.m.

Racers must compete in this event to be eligible for the qualifying district points.

Bench press meet at mall

Bodybuilders, power lifters and fitness enthusiasts ranging in age from 4 to 82 will participate in the inaugural Raw and Unassisted Bench Press Meet tomorrow from 2 to 7 p.m. at Windward Mall.

Fifty contestants will compete for trophies and prizes. Sonny Ronolo, a 77-year-old bodybuilder who holds more than 30 world records, will give a demonstration. IFBB pro bodybuilder Paula Suzuki also will appear.
