Baby Derby
to run at Expo

Give your crawler a workout by entering him or her in the Baby Derby Crawling Contest, one of the events at New Baby Expo taking place this weekend at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

The course is about 10 feet. Each contestant gets a bag of disposable Drypers Diapers and a baby T-shirt. The contest will take place noon to 2 p.m. Saturday and you can pre-register your child by calling 239-BABY (2229). Limited to 80 contestants. More diapers await the winners.

The expo runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, with demonstrations of baby and toddler products, information about services available to new parents, health information, entertainment and on-site shopping through stroller-friendly aisles.

Sunday's highlight will be "Hawaii's Largest Baby Shower Party" at 2 p.m. in the main stage area, with cake and a drawing for gift baskets for 100 expectant moms (must be present to win). Moms may pre-register by calling the number above.

Admission to the event is $3.50; children 5 and under will be admitted free.

Okinawan celebration

"Okinawa Music: A Centennial Celebration" will be staged 8 p.m. May 27 and 4 p.m. May 28 in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Okinawans' first arrival in Hawaii.

The concert in the Hawai'i Imin International Concert Center at Jefferson Hall, East-West Center, will feature master musician Harry Seisho Nakasone and cover a variety of Okinawan music styles. Guest artist Kaoru Zukeran will perform a martial arts dance and will lead a taiko ensemble. Hawaii's Mitsuko Toguchi will dance "Kuishi Omokage."

Tickets are $10 general and $8 for students, seniors, military, EWC Friends and University of Hawai'i faculty and staff. Tickets are at the UH Campus Center, or call 956-3836.

'Wild' woman to speak

Former Hawaii International Film Festival director and founder Jeanette Paulson Hereniko presents two solo performances of "Wild Wisdom" based on her own life stories at 7:30 p.m. May 23 and May 30 at Hawaii Pacific University's Kumu Kahua Theatre.

"Wild Wisdom" begins with a little girl who escapes a tumultuous childhood by making her dreamworld a reality. At midlife, a family crisis and a passionate romance force her to encounter all that she has been avoiding. Tickets are $7.

Join the chorus

Registration is being taken for the Oahu Choral Society's 3rd annual Hawaii International Choral Festival to be held June 25 through July 1.

"Brother Sun, Sister Moon: the Canticle of the Creatures," directed by Timothy Carney, will feature a week of workshops, lectures and vocal master classes concluding with the premiere American performance of Swiss composer Hermann Suter's oratorio, Le Laudi di San Francesco d'Assisi.

The festival concert will be performed 7:30 p.m. July 1 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets -- at $12.50, $25, $35 and $45 -- may be purchased by calling 792-2000.
