Kennelly wins surf
title in Tahiti

Hanalei's Keala Kennelly scored her maiden Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour title yesterday in the Gallaz Women's Pro at Teahupoo in Tahiti.

Kennelly, 21, beat Australian Serena Brooke in the final in powerful 3- to 4-foot waves and moved up to a share of second alongside fellow Hawaii resident Megan Abubo in the ASP world rankings. Australian Layne Beachley tied for fifth in the event and maintained her No. 1 position in the ratings.

Kennelly pocketed $6,000 for her victory.

The Gallaz Women's Pro is the third event on the ASP World Championship Tour.

The next stop on the tour is July 1-11 at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa, for the Billabong Pro.
