A prize-winning journalist knows what she'd do if she suddenly became owner of a medium-sized newspaper.

"I'd look at the layout and make sure it's as up-to-date and clean as could be," said Anna Weaver.

A junior at Sacred Hearts Academy, she's editor of Ka Leo, her school paper, just named outstanding state high-school newspaper with best consistent quality.

Competition was sponsored by the Hawaii Newspaper Agency and Hawaii Publishers Association.

The 16-year-old Weaver had to whip a relatively green 11-member staff into shape, teaching the staffers effective writing and page layout during the past academic year.

"Their writing has improved immensely over the year," she said. "It was kind of a new staff, so it was basically getting them integrated."

Duties are rotated, with everyone taking turns reporting and editing on the monthly publication, she said.

The paper usually has eight pages, 11 by 15 inches. The editors aim for variety and try to avoid boring material. There's news, news features, sports and editorial opinion.

"We focused on the basketball team," she said.

A big story was a Sacred Hearts teacher going to Siberia on an exchange program. She was in Kyzyl, Tuva, Siberia, from Oct. 15 to Nov. 8.

Another top story was a Mothers Against Drunk Driving demonstration on campus in March. It was accompanied by a related feature, the usual practice.

"We connect the news to features," Weaver said.

What's next? "I'm going on a journalism workshop this summer," she said. "I'm going to be spending two weeks in Illinois through the Girl Scouts."

Summer activity also includes part-time work and a Honolulu Dance Theater production with her ballet company.

Then it's one more year at the all-girls school in Kaimuki.

"I really like Sacred Hearts," she said, where the concentration is on academics. "I just like the environment overall."

What's after Sacred Hearts? "Definitely college, I'm not sure where yet."

She's thinking of studying journalism at Northwestern University in Illinois.

"I love to write," she said. "I'm thinking creative writing, too."
