Visit the missile destroyer USS O'Kane this weekend.



Ship open house

The public is invited to take a free tour of the USS O'Kane 2 to 5 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, in celebration of Military Appreciation Week.

The guided missile destroyer, equipped with the Navy's Aegis combat weapons system, will be at Aloha Tower Marketplace Pier 9.

The ship is named in honor of Rear Adm. Richard H. O'Kane (1911-1994), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his attacks on two Japanese convoys while in command of the World War II submarine Tang in 1944. After his submarine was sunk, O'Kane spent the war in captivity.

Other events at Aloha Tower Marketplace, also free:

Bullet Today -- USO Canteen Swing Dance in the Pier 10 Terminal, 7 to 11 p.m., featuring the 25th Infantry Division Swing Band and Hula Joe and the Hutjumpers.
Bullet Tomorrow -- Noon to 5 p.m. displays of military vehicles, uniforms and a replica of the bronze sculpture from the national Iwo Jima Memorial. Also, clowns, magicians and face painters, and a 1 p.m. arm wrestling contest with each service branch sending in its champions.
Bullet Sunday -- Royal Hawaiian Band performance at 1:45 p.m. with formal 2 p.m. program featuring posting of colors, Hawaiian blessing and speeches.

Keiki hula fest in Kapolei

The 2000 Hawai'i Secondary School Hula Kahiko Competition, featuring hula halau from 20 public and private schools throughout Oahu, will take place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. tomorrow at Kapolei Middle School, outdoors on the school's new hula mound.

Craft and food booths will be sponsored by Kapolei Middle School. Tickets are $6, with keiki 5 and under admitted free. Seating is on the grass; bring mats. No outside food, drinks, coolers or large umbrellas are allowed.

The event is sponsored by the Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society. Call 693-7025, ext. 232.

See mummy on mom's day

If you haven't yet figured out what to do after brunch on Mother's Day, the Honolulu Academy of Arts will give moms a break on admission.

From noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, all moms accompanied by at least one paying keiki, 17 or younger, will be given free admission to the "Mystery of the Nile: Treasures from Ancient Egypt" exhibition. Child admissions are $5 to $12. For reservations, call 532-8724.
