WAILUKU -- Iao Intermediate School will be holding a May Day celebration on June 2, following student protests about its cancellation.

School Principal Elizabeth Ayson said the decision was made to reschedule the event after a number of students, teachers and staff members volunteered to help organize the May Day celebration.

Ayson said she decided to cancel the May Day celebration, after consulting with teachers about the difficulty in organizing a "quality" event, in light of changes in the SAT testing schedule this month.

Following Ayson's decision, a group of student protesters criticizing the decision waved signs at the school and along the main highway through Wailuku last week.

Ayson said the event performers have agreed to hold many of their practices after school and on weekends.

"They exercised their civic duty," Ayson said. "I felt they really wanted it and wanted to be heard."

About 150 to 200 students are expected to perform during the two-hour event at the school with an enrollment of 860 students.
