BYUH top seed
in tennis

Brigham Young-Hawaii is the top seed in the NCAA Division II women's tennis tournament, which begins tomorrow in Pensacola, Fla.

BYUH, the defending national champion, will play Ferris State of Michigan in a first-round match. Hawaii Pacific will play at the same time against Armstrong Atlantic State of Georgia.

Should the two Hawaii teams win their first round matches, they will meet Friday in a quarterfinal match. The Seasiders defeated the Lady Sea Warriors three times this season.

HPU is the No. 3 seed in the men's tournament, which will be held at the same time and place as the women's tournament. HPU's first-round opponent tomorrow is Bloomsburg of Pennsylvania.

Gold for Yamauchi

Hawaii's Bryce Yamauchi won the 51-kilogram class of the Young Louis Cyr Under-16 Junior USA/Canada Tournament in Huntingdon, Quebec, last weekend.

Yamauchi finished with a snatch of 72 kilograms (158.4 pounds) and had a clean-and-jerk of 90 kg. (198 pounds) for a total of 162 kg. (356.4 pounds).

Irons advances in meet

Hawaii's Andy Irons posted a perfect 10-point ride yesterday during his first-round heat at the Gotcha Pro Tahiti surf meet at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Irons eliminated defending champion Mark Occhilupo of Australia, finishing with 26.55 out of a possible 30 points. Irons advances straight to the third round.

Current ratings leader Sunny Garcia of Hawaii led his heat up until the final 30 seconds, when Tahitian Vetea David snuck into a smaller inside wave to score the points he needed to win the heat. Garcia will now have to surf in the sudden-death second round.
