Fourteen Hawaii high school football players who excelled on the field and in the classroom took center stage last night during the 2000 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

The football players honored were: Kanoa Alapai, Kamehameha; Benson Broyles, Waimea (Kauai); Timmy Chang, St. Louis; Matthew DeCoito, Hilo; Russ Fukushima, Moanalua; Everett Hesia, Kamehameha; Chad Kahale, St. Louis; Britton Komine, Maryknoll; Jonathan Nagato, St. Louis; Jesse Park, Moanalua; Bronson Sismar, St. Louis; Jesse Vaiagae, Aiea; Nolan Wada, Baldwin (Maui); and Reid Yoshikawa, Kaimuki.

UH water polo ninth

Hawaii defeated UC-Santa Barbara 11-6 in women's water polo yesterday to take ninth place at the Collegiate National Championships.

The Wahine went 3-1 in the tournament to finish their season with an overall record of 22-15.

Lisa De Rossi led Hawaii with four goals, while Eko Lapp added 3. Alyssa Garrick, Robin Jones, Mandy Crawford and Rebecca Angus had one each for the Wahine.

UCLA beat Southern Cal 11-4 to win the 16-team tourney.

Komine pitches in upset

Hawaii's Shane Komine pitched a six-hitter to lead Nebraska to a 4-0 upset of No. 6 Texas on Saturday.

Komine, a former Kalani High pitcher, ran his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 18, and he improved to 9-3.

Hayashi leads GTE golf

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 2-under 71 yesterday to lead the GTE Hawaiian Tel Hall of Fame Championship golf tournament at The Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui.

Hayashi leads Brian Sasada by two strokes. Ben Hongo and Michael Rich are two shots back.

Dennis Rose fired a 72 and leads the senior competition by one shot over Larry Stubblefield.

The final round is today.

Hoops fund-raiser

Murphy's Bar & Grill will transform Merchant Street into a basketball block party to help fight cancer.

On May 18, Murphy's is teaming up with the American Cancer Society and the University of Hawaii basketball program to host the Coaches vs. Cancer Auction from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

There also will be a 3-point shooting contest.
