Hawaiians
seek ideas on
draft constitution

The Native Hawaiian Convention is meeting at 6 p.m. tonight to get input on a draft constitution to govern an independent Hawaiian nation, one of two proposed models of sovereignty under consideration by the group.

Holo I Mua: Sovereignty Roundtable The discussion will include the naturalization process, land jurisdiction, international relations and government structure.

The convention is considering five major proposals on independence, including the constitutions of the Hawaiian monarchy that were in place before 1893.

Another model of sovereignty being discussed by the convention is for a nation-within-a-nation form of government.

"These are complex issues, yes -- but they help to lay out a positive future for all of Hawaii," said delegate Ikaika Hussey.

The meeting is at the American Friends Service Committee offices, 2426 Oahu Ave.
