Kalaheo and Brandy Richardson continued their dominance in Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' basketball last night.

The second-ranked Mustangs won their 35th straight OIA game, routing Leilehua, 61-27, in a tournament semifinal at Kalaheo.

Richardson scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Mustangs (11-0) advanced to tomorrow's 2:30 p.m. title game with Nanakuli (11-2) at the Stan Sheriff Center. Kalaheo is seeking its third straight league championship.

In tomorrow's third-place game, Leilehua (11-2) faces Kahuku (8-4) at 4:30 p.m.

"We had good matchups and we were the quicker team," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "I felt if we got Brandy (Richardson) the ball in the open floor, make the extra pass, we could get our shooters open. Then we were able to get the ball inside and make some shots."

"Kalaheo was the better team," Leilehua coach Buz Vasper said. "We never played a team of their caliber. They have a lot of experience - and with Brandy Richardson inside, she is outstanding."

Richardson scored eight first-quarter points and the Mustangs jumped out to a 15-3 lead.

Leilehua (10-2) forced 13 turnovers before intermission but couldn't capitalize.

The Mustangs missed 10 of 19 free throws in the first half but still led, 33-15.

"We had to come down off those steals and make baskets," Vasper said. "We are not solid offensively but we do play hard. We relied on our second and third shots and if they don't fall, we are going to struggle."

"They were physical and they did a lot of trapping," Furtado said. "I was not happy with our first half performance, but we did a much better job attacking. I felt we could press them and that hurt Leilehua."

The Mustangs outscored the Mules, 28-12, in the second half behind Richardson's nine third-quarter points.
