At her age, Hatason wouldn't last very long in Hawaii without an air conditioner.

It's one of the modern conveniences that helps to preserve her presence in the 21st century.

Hatason, the high priestess of the god Amun-Re, is an Egyptian mummy, 3,600 years old.

She's visiting Hawaii from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

An air-conditioning breakdown in the educational wing yesterday forced Academy of Arts officials to move Hatason to a cooler storage room, but she will be out of view.

"She's being treated with due respect," Art Academy director George Ellis said.

Hatason is not part of the main Egyptian exhibit, said Charlie Aldinger, Art Academy spokeswoman.

A problem with the air-conditioning unit's control panel bank only affects the educational wing. "They're reassembling it on the mainland and, hopefully, it'll be done by the end of next week," Aldinger said.
