Miyagi takes second
place in Arizona

Julie Miyagi of Honolulu finished second in the Antelope Hills Women's Classic on the Players West Tour with a final-round 71 for a 54-hole total of 213 yesterday in Prescott, Ariz.

Miyagi earned $900 in finishing second to Cary Kohatsu of Glendale, Calif., who also carded a 71 for a 212 total at the par-72 Antelope Hills Golf Course.

Marie Miyashiro, also of Hawaii, finished in 25th place at 236.

Former Mililani resident Nicole Horner Gardner, who now plays out of Mesa, Ariz., earned $1,678 in winning the Players West Tour inaugural event two weeks ago in Hesperia, Calif.

Gardner holed out a birdie chip on the first playoff hole in beating Krista Bartlett after they finished with a 36-hole score of 148 in the rain-shortened event.

Hawaii boxers upended

Two Hawaii boxers lost their quarterfinal bouts yesterday at the National Golden Gloves Tournament in Detroit.

Jay Saribay of Hawaii Youth fell to Tony Davis of Knoxville, Tenn., in their 132-pound bout, while Van Oscar Penovaroff of Kailua-Kona fell to Tyronne Harris of Michigan in their 125-pound bout.

Both Saribay and Penovaroff lost 5-0 decisions.

Matsumura is All-WAC

A closing aggregate 303 yesterday gave the University of Hawaii a sixth place finish at the Western Athletic Conference men's golf tournament.

The Rainbows finished at 900, 36 strokes behind Fresno State. The Bulldogs were the only team in the eight team field to post a sub-par total (8-under 856).

In medal play, Hawaii's Jaime Matsumura, who was named to the All-WAC team, shot a closing 74 to finish in a four-way tie for sixth place at 1-over 217.

Matsumura, who had four top 10 finishes this season, is the first Rainbow golfer to earn all-conference honors since Mike Pavao in 1996.

Other Hawaii finishers were Ryan Nygard, who shot a 225 total to finish 22nd, Scott Carlyle (227) in 25th place, Norman-Ganin Asao (232) tied for 33rd and Louis Mexia (237) in 40th place.

Workers play today

The Shanghai Workers Football Club team will be playing a Hawaii Amateur Soccer Association all-star team in a match today at Kapiolani Park.

The match is at 4:30 p.m. at Kapiolani Park's No. 4 field.

The Hawaii team is made up of players from the Men's Island Soccer Organization (MISO), comprised mostly of players from Latin Hawaii and Lanikai.

Prep grid banquet Sunday

The Hawaii chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame will honor 14 high school football players at its annual banquet Sunday.

Tickets are still available for the event which will be held at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Banquet Room.

OIA girls time change

The start of the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' basketball championship game Saturday at Stan Sheriff Center has been changed to 2:30 p.m.

The third-place game will follow the championship game. The junior varsity championship game will start at 12:30 p.m.

The OIA semifinals are tonight with Leilehua at Kalaheo and Kahuku at Nanakuli. Both games start at 7 p.m.

UH ticket renewals due

The deadline to renew season tickets for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football team is tomorrow.

Mailed renewals must have a postmark of tomorrow or before.
