Rockies sign Tejada

Mike Tejada, who spent his childhood in Kahuku, signed a contract with the Colorado Rockies April 21.

Tejada, a catcher, played baseball for Kamehameha in the seventh and eighth grades. His family then moved to the mainland, where he played high school ball.

During his freshman year at Brigham Young University, Tejada hit .347 with six home runs and 30 runs batted in.

The past two years he has been on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints.

He returned too late to join the BYU team this season and decided to turn pro.

Tejada was drafted in the 17th round of the 1999 draft.

"Our people like him," said Rockies spokesman Jay Alves. "Mike has been sent to extended spring training in Tucson.

"He'll be assigned to a short-season team in June unless he demonstrates he's ready to play before that."
