Kahuku tops Pearl City
in double OT hoops

Top seeds take ILH tennis

Three close finishes highlighted the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' basketball playoffs last night at Nanakuli and Roosevelt.

Winners Kahuku, Nanakuli, Aiea and Roosevelt play tonight against Moanalua, McKinley, Kalaheo and Leilehua, respectively.

KAHUKU 64, PEARL CITY 58 (2OT):

At Nanakuli, Lindsey Williams scored four of her game-high 22 points in the second overtime to pace the Red Raiders (7-3) past the Chargers (6-5).

"She worked an extra hour on her shooting yesterday, and it really paid off," Kahuku coach Mona Ah Hoy said of Williams.

Kahuku's April Atuaia made a free throw with three seconds left to force the first overtime.

Pearl City's Momilani Monis hit a driving layup as time expired in the first overtime, and then made a free throw to tie it and force another OT.

Rosemarie Kelly came up with a loose ball in the closing seconds as the host Hawks (9-2) thwarted a furious Governors' (3-7) rally.

Farrington's Robynn Afe scored 12 of her game-high 24 points in the last 1:58.

"Those coaches who said Afe tires out in the second half, they lie," Hawks' coach Darin Pilialoha said.

Kelly, who played with four fouls most of the second half, made two free throws after she stole the ball with 32 seconds left. She gained possession of the loose ball with eight seconds left and hung on until the buzzer.

Top seeds take ILH tennis titles

All four top seeds held form to win Interscholastic League of Honolulu tennis titles yesterday at Iolani School.

Tracie Chong of Iolani and Richard Salem of Punahou won the singles championships. Kamehameha's Kaloi sisters -- Janelle and Kim -- and the Kamehameha team of Tyler Black and Cole Millare won state doubles titles

The state tourney will be May 11-13 on the Big Island.
