Leilehua earns top
seed in OIA West
baseball

Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball teams continued to scramble for positions yesterday as the regular season winds down and the league tournament looms closer.

Leilehua (9-0) earned the Western Division's No. 1 seed in next week's OIA Tournament by beating Moanalua, and Kailua (7-1) beat Kaimuki to stay on pace to claim the East's top seed.

Saturday is the last day of the regular season.

LEILEHUA 10, MOANALUA 9:

The visiting Mules built a 10-4 lead and outlasted the Menehunes (3-7) yesterday.

Leilehua scored four times in the fifth inning, highlighted by a Cheyne Todani RBI triple.

Leilehua can take the division title Saturday with a win at Aiea or a Mililani loss to Nanakuli.

The Trojans (8-1) scored two runs at the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the host Chargers (5-4).

Losing pitcher Corey Fujinaga gave up just one hit -- a Derek Costigan single in the sixth.

Johnson Mukaida walked and scored on a wild pitch and Costigan scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Watanabe in the winning rally.

Bruddah Choy Foo slammed a three-run homer and knocked in four runs as the Surfriders (7-1) moved to within one win of clinching the OIA Eastern Division title by beating the Bulldogs (3-5).

If Kailua and Castle both win Saturday, Kailua will be the top seed because it beat the Knights.

At Stevenson Intermediate, Chad Kapanui of Roosevelt (3-4-1) drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning to force in the tying run and the game was called after eight because of darkness.

The Tigers (4-3-1) took advantage of eight walks and six errors by the Rough Riders.

Kealani Kimball scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half as the Warriors (12-0) held off the Buffanblu (7-4) in their closest contest of the year.

Punahou stayed close by hitting 21-of-30 free throws in the second half. Milia Macfarlane led all scorers with 17 points.
