Ride ’em cowboy, cowgirl

It appears the paniolo spirit is alive and well in Hawaii high schools.

Kamehameha sophomore Jesse Dowsett and Kalaheo freshman Ryanna Cambra are the all-around champions of the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association's Oahu District Finals.

The competition was held recently at New Town & Country Stables.

HHSRA holds its state finals at Parker Ranch on the Big Island, June 9-12. The top four competitors in each event there win a chance to compete in the nationals, July 24-30 in Springfield, Ill.

The National High School Rodeo Association is represented in 38 states and four Canadian provinces.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: OIA tournament starts tomorrow

The Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' basketball tournament starts tomorrow, with the lower eight seeds beginning play. The top four seeds, including unbeaten Kalaheo (9-0) and Moanalua (10-0), play their first games Friday. The Mustangs are the defending champions. The championship game will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center on May 6 at 2:30 p.m.

BASEBALL: Kamehameha earns state berth

By winning the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season championship, Kamehameha (12-2) is in the state tournament. The league's overall champion and second state berth will be determined in the ILH tournament, played over the next two weeks. Friday's games pit the Warriors against University/Hawaii Baptist, Mid-Pacific vs. Maryknoll, Iolani vs. Damien and St. Louis vs. Punahou.

Fourteen football
players to be honored

A total of 14 football players will be honored by the Hawaii chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame at a banquet May 7 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

They are finalists for the organization's nominee for a national scholarship.

The players are Kanoa Alapai (Kamehameha), Benson Broyles (Waimea), Timmy Chang (St. Louis), Matthew DeCoito (Hilo), Russ Fukushima (Moanalua), Everett Hesia (Kamehameha), Chad Kahale (St. Louis), Britton Joel Komine (Pac-Five), Jonathan Nagato (St. Louis), Jesse Park (Moanalua), Bronson Sismar (St. Louis), Jesse Vaiagae (Aiea), Nolan Wada (Baldwin) and Reid Yoshikawa (Kaimuki).

Tommy Kaulukukui and Jerry M. Neumann Sr. will receive awards for service to Pop Warner football.

Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Keith Amemiya will speak, and John Fink is master of ceremonies.

For information contact Earl Galdeira at 839-5575.

MORE JASON:

The honors keep pouring in for Hilo's Jason Mandaquit, Mr. Basketball Hawaii 2000. Mandaquit, the 5-foot-9 point guard who led the Vikings to the state championship, was recently named the Rivals.com State Player of the Year.

Eddie Griffin of Pennsylvania was chosen the national Player of the Year.

FOLLOWING UP:

The Kaimuki-Kaiser baseball game last Wednesday was ruled forfeited by Kaimuki after umpires said two ejected coaches didn't leave the field.

Umpire Curtis Cho said he ejected a Kaimuki player for arguing balls and strikes, head coach Clyde Hayashida for arguing and assistant coach Dwight Kanetoku for swearing, and the coaches failed to leave the field immediately.

Kaimuki athletic director Ray Fujino did not appeal, and the player and coaches served a one-game suspension Saturday, according to OIA rules.

PADDLING DOWN UNDER:

The Kamehameha Schools paddling team is training to be the first high school squad to enter the World Sprints.

The competition is Aug. 12 in Townsville, Australia.

Those wishing to help the team raise money for the trip can contact Cindy Namohoe at 263-7663.
