Two games for the price of one?

Try two games for the price of one on two consecutive days. And maybe the home team in one of them.

The Jeep Oahu Bowl/Jeep Aloha Bowl Christmas Classic football games at Aloha Stadium will become a split doubleheader this year, organizers announced yesterday.

Lenny Klompus, chairman of the board of Bowl Games Hawaii, also said that the University of Hawaii will be assured of a spot if the Rainbows have another winning season.

The Oahu Bowl will be played at 3:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, in the NFL time slot on ESPN. The Aloha Bowl will be on Christmas Day at 10:30 a.m. and be part of the NFL Monday Night football package.

There will be one ticket for both games and no price increase from last year.

The current format invites two Pac-10 teams and one each from the Atlantic Coast and Big East. However, Klompus said, there is a special exemption for UH should the Rainbows be bowl-eligible.

The agreement was reached yesterday at the NCAA meetings in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Also yesterday, the ABC-TV network contract was renewed through 2005, bringing the games in line with the Bowl Championship Series.

Annual ticket renewals will be mailed early next month. The remaining tickets will go on sale in late summer via a special charge-by-phone line at 947-4141.
