Tapa

Private memorial services for the 23-year-old Schofield Barracks soldier killed last week during a training accident at the Big Island's Pohakuloa Training Area will be held Thursday.

Spec. Don Falter, a combat engineer assigned to the 25th Infantry Division's 65th Engineer Battalion, was killed Wednesday and four other soldiers from the same squad were injured.

Thursday afternoon's memorial service, which will be open only to members of Falter's unit, will be held at Schofield Barracks' main chapel.

The Army said the incident, the 25th Division's first training fatality at Pohakuloa in 12 years, occurred while the engineer squad was using a bangalore torpedo to destroy an obstacle.

The Army said a team of investigators from the Safety Center at Fort Rucker is reviewing the cause of the accident, which occurred during night training.
