Tapa

Three-for-four.

That's what University of Hawaii head coach June Jones said would help his program's visibility and that's what happened in the National Football League draft over the weekend.

The Rainbows' three most eligible players were scooped up in the first four rounds.

They are the first Rainbows to be drafted in the past six years, another benchmark in the amazing turnaround story of a program that was once the NCAA's doormat.

Left tackle Adrian Klemm was taken by the New England Patriots as the 15th pick of the second round; linebacker Jeff Ulbrich was drafted with the 24th pick of the third round by the San Francisco 49ers; and guard Kaulana Noa went as the 10th pick of the fourth round yesterday to the Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams.

Klemm was the 46th pick overall, Ulbrich was the 86th pick and Noa was 104th.

Meanwhile, former Farrington High star Josh White, the University of California's starting fullback the past three seasons, received a late-morning call from the 49ers inviting him to sign as a free agent.

Only four fullbacks were taken in the NFL draft, and the 49ers are in the market for a backup to Fred Beasley. Only Terry Jackson returns as a candidate for the No. 2 spot.

Klemm said he wasn't too disappointed at not being the first Rainbow ever to be taken in the first round of the NFL draft, even though CBS SportsLine on Thursday had him as the 25th best player on the board.

He said the idea of having a chance to protect Drew Bledsoe was exciting enough.

"I went out there (Foxborough) a few weeks ago, and they said that if for any reason, I slipped down, that they would select me," said Klemm from his home in Indianapolis.

"They called me and said turn on your TV. I was just overwhelmed with joy," said Klemm, who was the Patriots' first pick in the draft.

"I don't know if I will have a chance to start but I know I will compete," he said.

Klemm will go to a three-day camp with the Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., from April 28-30.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick , not known for picking offensive linemen so high, said he considers Klemm to be "a very athletic player, having been a college tight end and tackle."

Another thing that attracted the Patriots might have been Klemm's speed: 4.98 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Belichick said the fact that Jones ran the run-and-shoot made Klemm "relatively an accomplished pass-blocker."

Klemm said he feels good that he's filling a position the Patriots badly needed to fill -- a position formerly filled by Bruce Armstrong.

But Belichick said he thinks that Klemm has some position flexibility, hinting that he might also be tried out at guard.

"I think he could play a couple of different positions for us," Belichick said. "His main position was left tackle in college but I'm not sure that's where he'll play for us. We spent a lot of time with Adrian when we brought him in last week and he's a very personable and intelligent young man. He had two workouts in Indianapolis we attended. He pulled his hamstring in the first one but we were there last week and this kid's a pretty good athlete."

Ulbrich, who set the Hawaii record for tackles, went to the 49ers via trade. San Francisco gave Seattle its fourth- and fifth-round picks in exchange for the Seahawks' third-round spot.

Noa, the first Big Island player to be drafted into the NFL, said he was excited to be picked by the Rams.

"Got to get ME a ring now," said Noa, who received his call at 5:15 a.m. "The Rams know how to win and they know how it feels."

Noa spent the day at the home of his Honokaa High School coach, Rick Sakata.
