UH water polo team
bows to San Jose St.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawaii women's water polo team fell to San Jose State, 7-3, in the seventh-place match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships yesterday.

Stanford won the tournament with a 6-4 victory over California.

The seventh-ranked Wahine (16-12) trailed, 2-1, after one period, and never got any closer.

Robin Jones, Amy Morrow and Eko Lapp scored for UH, which ends its season next week at home against Cal State Bakersfield.

Wahine slip past Vulcans twice

The University of Hawaii softball team swept a doubleheader from Hawaii-Hilo yesterday, 8-7 and 3-2.

Kristin Anderson ended the first game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a one-out RBI single.

Freshman Sheri Oronoz earned the victory in relief with two scoreless innings.

Oronoz (7-5) pitched a three-hitter in the second game for the Wahine (16-15). Demetria Costa hit a two-run homer in the fourth, her first for UH, and Dana Degen provided the winning margin with a solo homer in the fifth.

Diana Kim rapped three hits on the day for Hilo, including a two-run homer in the second game.

Northwest Nazarene lands Hanson

Ka'ala Hanson, a 5-foot-9 middle blocker for girls' state volleyball champion Kamehameha, has signed a letter of intent to play for Idaho's Northwest Nazarene University.

Haleiwa Century bike ride is on

The Haleiwa Metric Century Ride will be held as scheduled on April 30, sponsor Hawaii Bicycling League announced yesterday.

Riders had been concerned that the race might be canceled because of the Waimea rock slide.

The ride will start at 7:30 a.m. at Kaiaka State Park in Haleiwa. The preregistration deadline is April 17. Packet pick-up will be April 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the HBL office, 3442 Waialae Ave., Suite 1. Applications are available at all bike shops or direct from HBL.

IT&B Cycle Swap at St. Mark's

Island Triathlon & Bike's Cycle Swap Meet will take place April 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. Mark's Church, 539 Kapahulu Ave.

It is a benefit for Hawaii Bicycling League community programs.

A buyer's donation is $6 ($5 for HBL members) and a seller's half-table costs $15 ($10 for HBL members). For more information, call Frank Smith at 732-7227.

Bigger stakes for Triathlon winners

The World Triathlon Corporation has announced a prize increase of $100,000 for the men's and women's winners of this year's Ironman Triathlon World Championships.

The prize for the top finisher in each division will double, from $35,000 to $70,000.

American Isuzu Motor Company also will give each winner a brand new Isuzu Rodeo, taking the prize package up to $100,000.

The 2000 Ironman Triathlon Worlds will be held Oct. 14 in Kailua-Kona.

Mauna Lani golfing promotions

Mauna Lani Resort has promoted Steven Hookano to Head Golf Professional and Jason Nishimoto to Assistant Manager of Golf Operations. Hookano was hired in May, 1999 as Assistant Golf Pro. He is a PGA Class A Pro. Nishimoto has been assisting in the operations of Mauna Lani Golf since mid-1998.
