Maui firm is low bidder for Waimea highway job

Goodfellow Brothers, a Maui-based construction company, is the lowest bidder in the competition for the state contract to build a new stretch of highway at Waimea.

Goodfellow submitted a bid of $7,472,435 for the job, which the state estimated would cost $4 million to $6 million.

Three other contractors also submitted bids, which ranged from $8,049,675 by Hawaiian Dredging to $14,350,110 by Okada Trucking Inc.

Kiewit Pacific, which built the temporary bypass road and is scaling the loose rocks from the cliff face, submitted a bid of $8,478,860, according to Marilyn Kali, spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation.

She said officials will be reviewing the "apparent low bid" to make sure it meets the state's requirements. Awarding of the contract was expected to be announced later today.

Nuuanu catfish season opens June 3

Catfish season comes late this year, thanks to time needed to boost spawning.

The spring opening of Nuuanu Reservoir on June 3 will be several weeks later than usual, the state said. Biologists are going all out to locate catfish eggs and provide supportive habitats.

"The number of naturally spawning catfish in the reservoir has declined over the years," said Dennis Shinno, aquatic biologist. "A number of new fish have been introduced ... but they apparently aren't acclimated to Nuuanu conditions."

The young fish are reared from eggs at a state facility, and returned to the reservoir. "Allowing our biologists to increase the collection of eggs will help increase the catfish population in future seasons that fishermen can enjoy," said Bill Devick, aquatic resources administrator.

Applications for the required fishing license and entry fishing card may be picked up at the visitor center at 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 130, from May 1 on.
