The Kamehameha girls' basketball team appears to have picked up right where it left off last spring.

The defending state champions hammered visiting Punahou, 75-45, last night to improve to 6-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Katannya Kapeli led the Warriors with 18 points, and Noelle Russell contributed 17 off the bench.

"I just let it fly tonight and it was falling for me, so I kept doing it," Russell said. "I was open a lot, so I kept taking the shots."

The fourth-ranked Buffanblu (3-2) are one of the few teams in the state thought to have a chance at challenging the top-ranked Warriors, but the game was over shortly after it began.

The Warriors, who never trailed, used tenacious defense to jump to an 18-4 first-quarter lead. Their full-court press produced numerous Punahou turnovers

Though the Warriors backed off from their press after the first quarter, they continued to increase their lead. The Buffanblu did not score their first field goal until one minute into the second quarter, and managed only two more for the first half.

Ashley DeSilva hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the second quarter, and Russell scored eight points in the first half.

The Warriors built a 52-22 lead with three minutes to go in the third quarter, but suffered their only defensive lapse of the game, when Punahou went on an 11-3 run to make the score 55-33 at the end of three quarters.

"Defensively, the third quarter was our worst quarter in a long time," coach Clay Cockett said. "We didn't do a good job of playing smart in the quarter; we committed too many fouls."

The Warriors got back on track defensively in the fourth quarter, and were lead on offense by Kapeli, who had 13 points in the second half.

Russell continued to shine on offense as well, adding nine more points during the second half.

DeSilva contributed 13 points.

The Warriors made five 3-pointers compared to zero for Punahou. Becky Hogue led Punahou with 17 points.
