Spartans edge
Sea Warriors

Tony Tognetti's two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave San Jose State a 6-5 baseball victory over Hawaii Pacific yesterday at San Jose, Calif.

The Spartans improved to 22-10 while the Sea Warriors slipped to 15-14.

Softball split for Wahine

The University of Hawaii softball team rallied for two runs in the seventh inning for a 3-2 win over Long Beach State in the opener of a doubleheader at Long Beach, Calif., yesterday, but the 49ers took the nightcap, 3-2.

The split left the Wahine at 14-15 for the season. The 49ers are 27-12.

Dana Degen and Desiree Duran of Hawaii were named the Western Athletic Conference softball player and pitcher of the Week after leading the Wahine to four wins in six games a week ago.

Degen, a senior catcher, batted .533 and Duran, a junior left-hander, was 2-1 on the mound with an 0.34 ERA.

UH No. 6 in volleyball

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team is ranked sixth in this week's USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 15.

Pepperdine (18-3) is No. 1, followed by Long Beach State (20-3), USC (18-4), UCLA (22-3), Ohio State (18-3) and the Rainbows (16-8).

BYUH women win big

Brigham Young-Hawaii, the nation's top-ranked women's tennis team, beat fourth-ranked West Florida, 8-1, and blitzed Alabama State, 9-0, yesterday at Pensacola, Fla.
