Sheriff services Saturday

Friends of Michael Stephen Sheriff who wish to join the Sheriff family in a celebration of his life are invited to the scattering of ashes at sea from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The boat will depart from Barbers Point Deep Draft Harbor in Kapolei.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in Michael's name to the American Cancer Society in Honolulu.

Sheriff died on March 26. The 39-year-old son of Jane and the late Stan Sheriff, had been battling cancer since late last year. He also is survived by brothers Paul and Richard.

Stan Sheriff was the University of Hawaii athletic director from 1983 until his death in 1993. The special events arena at UH now bears his name.

Michael Sheriff, a University of Iowa graduate, was director of sales for B. Hayman Co., a retailer of golf course lawn and turf maintenance equipment.

Wahine split doubleheader

Left-hander Desiree Duran pitched a two-hitter as the University of Hawaii Wahine beat Loyola-Marymount, 4-1, in the opener of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Los Angeles yesterday.

The Lions bounced back to win the second game, 4-2.

Tyree Woodruff, Demetria Costa and Kristin Anderson each had two hits for UH in the first game.

Melissa McGie, Kate Judd and Jennifer Tandarich had two hits for the Wahine (13-14, 3-1 WAC), who complete their California swing tomorrow at Long Beach State.

The split left Loyola Marymount 21-17 overall 4-5 in the WAC.

Sea Warriors lose on road

Derek Bell set a Sonoma State baseball record with his 14th home run of the season and the Cossacks defeated Hawaii Pacific, 5-2, yesterday at Rohnert Park, Calif.

HMA conference tomorrow

The Hawaii Medical Association Sports Medicine Committee will conduct a conference on "The Injured Athlete" tomorrow evening at the HMA Building, 1360 S. Beretania Street.

The conference begins with dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by presentations from 6 to 9.

Topics include sports nutrition, sports psychology, the female triad, and shoulder, elbow and wrist and hand injuries.

The Hawaii Athletic Trainers Association will conduct an upper-extremity taping clinic.

Cost of the conference is $10. It is open to doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers and coaches at all levels. Please call Noreen at 536-7703 for reservations.

Beede leaves tennis post

Mark Beede, executive director of the U.S. Tennis Association/Ha-waii Pacific Section, has resigned to pursue other career opportunities, it was announced Saturday.
