Continental Airlines is once again flying seven days a week nonstop between Honolulu and Newark, N.J., a major gateway for New York City.

The airline had cut back for the winter, dropping the Monday and Wednesday direct flights, although Continental officials said all along that the service had done well since it started in June 1998.

"The flight continues to do extremely well," said Ron Wright, Hawaii region managing director of sales and marketing.

"The increase in flights to the Newark area opens space for the additional travelers we usually see during the spring and summer months."

Continental flies 242-passenger DC-10 aircraft for the flight of about nine hours.

The Houston-based airline has promoted Hawaii heavily to residents of the New York area, pushing its major hub at Newark. It has also promoted Newark to Hawaii residents as a way to enter New York. The airline operates a hubs in Newark, Houston and Cleveland.
