Rainbows sweep again
Star-Bulletin staffSAN DIEGO - Another night, and another sweep for the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team.
That's four in a row for the Rainbows after they dispatched San Diego State, 17-15, 15-8, 15-5.
But was coach Mike Wilton happy?
Not really - at least not totally.
The Aztecs pushing the Rainbows hard in the first game was to be expected, but not accepted, he said.
"I don't think we brought much out onto the court tonight," Wilton said last night. "When you sweep someone, I guess you have to expect some complacency the next night."
Outside hitter Clay Stanley was sufficiently pumped, though. Stanley fired 24 kills in just 33 attempts.
"Clay put up some good kill numbers," Wilton said. "So did Eyal (Zimet) and Costas (Theocharidis). And Brenton (Davis) was stellar again."
Davis helped knock down eight SDSU attacks, and blocked another by himself.
He also hit at .500 in just 14 attempts.
UH hopes to continue to close in on a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoff berth when it completes its road-trip tonight and tomorrow against San Diego.
"They're not as good as San Diego State," Wilton said. "So that's a motivational challenge for us."
