Big hug from
a little lady

Susan Chandler, state Human Services director,

yesterday. Chandler was launching child abuse
prevention month for April. Shelby, not an abused
child, was representing all the children of Hawaii.



Pali gets safety signal

The Rev. Mike Young of First Unitarian Church
tries out the flashing amber lights activated today
for the crosswalk at Pali Highway and Jack Lane.
The lights, embedded into the street in a $45,400
pilot project, may be the first of many around the
island. Five pedestrians have been killed along
Pali Highway since 1994.

Bridget Nishimura, left, gives Shari Nakahara a hug
during the fund-raiser yesterday for Shari's 5-year-old
daughter, Brianne. Nishimura and Nakahara both work
at United Airlines. Brianne has spent the past year at
Kaiser Medical Center with pneumonia and high fevers
caused by unknown disease. Anyone who wants to help
the family can donate money at First Hawaiian Bank.



Car strikes pole;
highway access blocked

A car hit a utility pole about 9:45 a.m. today at Punchbowl
Street and Vineyard Boulevard, causing traffic delays in
the area and cutting access from Punchbowl Street to the
H-1 Freeway and the Pali Highway. Part of Punchbowl
was expected to be closed for four to five hours.
