UH men swimmers
at NCAA nationals

Two University of Hawaii men's swimming relay teams are entered in the NCAA National Championships, which started today in Minneapolis.

The 200-meter freestyle team of Dave Jenkins, Nick Folker, Luis Rojas and Ramie Darling and the 400 medley team of Simon Thirsk, Pedro Ferrario, Folker and Rojas will compete.

Both Folker and Jenkins will also compete in the 50-meter freestyle individual event.

3-V-3 soccer fests

The National Soccer Academy, a nonprofit organization based in California, will host Oahu's first-ever 3-V-3 Soccer Festivals at Salt Lake District Park. Event dates are every Saturday from April 8 through May 13, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This festival is open to all boys and girls born between 1988 and 1992, regardless of experience or league affiliation.

A one-time registration fee of $35 covers all six weeks of play, and includes a National Soccer Academy T-shirt and liability insurance. Further information and registration forms may be found at various sports retail outlets throughout Oahu, or by calling John Abkemeier at 388-6059.

HPU shuts out BYUH

The Hawaii Pacific University softball team swept a doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawaii at HPU's Windward Field yesterday.

The Sea Warriors (17-7 overall, 9-3 in the Pacific West Conference) won by scores of 2-0 and 4-0.

Right-hander Jennifer Woodward was the story in the opener, hurling a five-hitter. She hasn't allowed an earned-run in her last 35 innings pitched.

In game two, lefty Susie Schoales held the Seasiders to just nine hits, while Tascha Berinobis led the offense with two hits.

HPU pitchers have thrown four straight shutouts.

The Sea Warriors, winners of five straight, are ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II.

UH softball out of poll

After a 1-4 performance in the Kia Classic last week, the University of Hawaii softball team has fallen out of the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 for the first time this season.

The Wahine (9-9) began the year at No. 21 and rose as high as No. 17.

All nine of UH's losses have come against ranked opponents.

Gatorade players named

Kalaheo forward Brandy Richardson and Maryknoll guard Kenneth Lindsay are the female and male winners, respectively, of the Gatorade Hawaii High School Player of the Year Award.

Richardson, the Star-Bulletin's Ms. Basketball Hawaii last season, was chosen for the second straight year.

Lindsay and Richardson were two of 102 players representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia to be honored.

The winners were selected for their excellence on the court and in the classroom, and are eligible for the National High School Player of the Year honor.

Big Island pros team up

Kevin Caril and Jay Taise, both golf pros on the Big Island, teamed to win the Aloha Section PGA Pro-Pro Championship at Makena Resort's South Course.

Caril, representing Hapuna Golf Course, and Waikoloa Golf Club's Taise, carded a 4-under 68 yesterday to finish with a 135. Five other tandems finished a stroke back in tying for second.

UH water polo on road

The eighth-ranked University of Hawaii women's water polo team will visit California for a three-game road trip starting Sunday.

UH (13-7 overall, 2-5 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) plays No. 16 Pacific (7-11) on Sunday. The Wahine then meet up with Santa Clara (8-12) on Tuesday before finishing up with a match against No. 1 California (16-2) on Wednesday.

Banks soccer to start

The American Youth Soccer Organization's 18th Annual Kirk Banks Soccer Tournament will be played at Kapiolani Park Thursday, March 30 through Sunday, April 2.

Over 150 teams from across the state with more than 2,700 players ranging in age from 8-18 will be competing.
