Relaxing root canal?

AH, what more could one ask for? You walk in, are offered a comfortable Lazy-Boy-like chair, treated to scented candles, a warm spa mask, vibrating pillow and soft music. Is this some new hostess bar or "relaxation center?" Well, not exactly. This is the kind of thing members of the American Association of Endodontists are promoting to make your visit to the dentist's office as pleasurable and pain-free as Mug shotpossible. And if you're planning to get a tooth-ache, try doing it at the end of the month when 2,000 members of the AAE will be gathering at the Convention Center March 29-April 1. I'm a kind of old fashioned guy, however -- just shoot me some nitrous oxide and do with me what you will ...

THE envy of many a real estate broker in town is Ivy Kumai of Kumai Realty. She sold the most Schuler homes in the past year and thereby won a certificate from Non-Stop Travel for a trip around the world. Despite the name, Kumai will be allowed to stop along the way ... We probably haven't heard the last of "Big Mike" Palcic and his celebrated diatribes at Neighborhood Board #5 meetings. But after numerous Palcic absences and legendary five-minute appearances, Karen Ah Mai, board chairman, reports members quietly voted his seat vacant ... THE UH "Late Night Theater" has announced its next production will be "Christie in Love," opening April 8. It has nothing to do with Christie Brinkley (or Billy Joel or his successors) however. It's Howard Brenton's play about serial killer and necrophiliac John Reginald Halliday Christie, who stalked and killed eight London women in the 1950s ...

Big is beautiful

IT'S probably just a coincidence, but KGMB is airing a special on humpback whales Thursday, hosted by Kim Gennaula. And the next night, Channel 9 airs "Wrestling in Hawaii," featuring the whale-sized grapplers who appeared on "50th State Wrestling" when it was one of the highest rated shows on TV. Lawrence Pacheco produced the show and Tom Moffatt hosts ... This leads us to the idea of Arnold Van Fossen who, inspired by the interest in large-sized game shows, wants to hold a contest to identify sumo wrestlers simply by an examination of their backsides -- similar to IDing whales by their flukes. Third prize would be a round trip to Tokyo for two, second prize would be a round trip to Tokyo for two plus basho seats for a tournament and first prize, "Intensive therapy for three weeks in the sanitarium of choice." ... LOCALITE Tom Hanley was stoked when Paul Harvey (yes, THAT Paul Harvey) gave his book, "Flyboys," a "monster good review." When he read here that Oprah Winfrey was on Maui he responded, "I'm on my way -- she would love it." The book is available at amazon.com and the Web sites of Borders and Barnes & Noble. Or you can order a copy by walking into either of those stores. The book deals with a boy growing up on an air force base during the cold war ...

Banding about

WHEN the local band Red Session relocated to San Francisco and toured the West Coast, member Jamie Winpenny went with them. He's now left the group and is writing a novel about a band on the road, something of a natural for him since his father, Jim Winpenny, is a writer and his mom, Mary, is publisher of Island Business. But now he's joined another band, Sturgeon General, and is touring the entire country, doubtless gathering new book material ...
