Garcia lone isle
surfer to advance

Sunny Garcia was the only Hawaii surfer remaining as the Billabong Pro moved into quarterfinal competition at Queensland, Australia, today.

Garcia defeated Brazil's Armando Daltro in yesterday's fourth round, scoring a 9.0 (out of a possible 10) on a late ride.

Hawaii's Kalani Robb, Shane Dorian and Shawn Sutton were eliminated in the third round.

In the women's competition, defending world champion Layne Beachley of Australia topped Lisa Andersen of Florida in the final.

Hawaii's Megan Abudo and Keala Kennelly tied for fifth, and Rochelle Ballard tied for ninth.

Water polo telecast

Today's 6 p.m. women's water polo match between seventh-ranked Hawaii and No. 17 Indiana at Duke Kahanamoku Pool will be telecast on a tape-delayed basis by KFVE starting at 9 p.m.

The Wahine (9-7) and Hoosiers (7-5) also will tangle Saturday at 6 p.m.

Becker, Chock excel

Robert Becker claimed his third consecutive men's epee gold medal and Colin Chock repeated as men's foil titlist in the U.S. Fencing Association/Hawaii Division 2000 Championships last week at the Richards Street YWCA.

Becker also captured the men's sabre gold medal.

Pratt sets lifting mark

Conrad K. Pratt, a 12-year-old sixth-grader at Punahou, shattered an American AAU bench-press record in the boys' 12-13/88 pounds-and-under weight class during the recent AAU Hawaii State Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships.

Pratt, who weighed 81 pounds, had a "raw" lift of 112.2 pounds, 40.2 better than the old record.

He has qualified to represent the U.S. in the AAU World Bench Press Championships at Boston and AAU World Powerlifting Championships in Nevada, both scheduled for November.

Drag racing series starts

The 2000 drag racing points chase kicks off Saturday night at Hawaii Raceway Park with the Budweiser Gold Cup Series season opener.

Gates will open at 4 p.m., with qualifying runs from 6-8 p.m. The first round of eliminations of the all-new points racing season starts at 8:30 p.m.

Nearly 100 teams will be in competition in the six Pro Gas classes and two E.T. brackets.

All six classes race for monthly trophies and cash awards, as well as points that will lead to a Season Champion Gold Cup, custom jacket and bonus year-end prizes.

Pro football tryouts

The Los Angeles Dragons of the Spring Football League, which consists of pro teams in L.A., San Antonio, Houston and Miami, will conduct player tryouts Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Cooke Field on the UH campus.

Dragons coach Doug Cosbie and assistant coaches Keith Millard and Guy McIntyre - all former NFL standouts - will assess local talent during the NFL-type combine, which will be position specific.

There is a $20 registration fee. Parking costs $3. All participants receive Dragons T-shirts. Call Mike Vasconcellos at 372-9118 or Reid Elam at 569-4528 (pager) for more information.
