Hawaiian style
in Michigan

In the unlikely home port of Ann Arbor, Mich., Shirley Tong Parola and her daughter, Lisa Parola Gaynier, served up Hawaii-style food at their Diamond Head Cafe. Now, in "Remembering Diamond Head, Remembering Hawaii" -- a "cookbook memoir" -- they share the recipes and the stories that made their cafe a Midwest haven for Hawaiian food.

The recipes cover the ethnic spectrum and run from basic favorites (Tutu's Tuna Macaroni Salad) to contemporary fusion fare (Chocolate Macadamia Nut Biscotti). They are accompanied by vignettes explaining the dishes or their ingredients. A recipe for malassadas, for example, is paired with an homage to Leonard's Bakery -- "Leonard's still does them best," the authors proclaim.

"Remembering Diamond Head" is distributed locally by Booklines and is available at Borders, Waldenbooks and other bookstores. Cover price is $15.95.
