UH water polo
team prevails

A goal by Eko Lapp 32 seconds into the first overtime period propelled the sixth-ranked University of Hawaii women's water polo team to a 9-8 win over No. 9 Long Beach State yesterday at Long Beach, Calif.

The Wahine improved to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The 49ers (9-10, 1-4 MPSF) rallied from a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Stacy Black scored a goal with just 35 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 8-8.

The Wahine return to Duke Kahanamoku Pool to play Indiana Thursday and Saturday. Both matches start at 6 p.m.

Softball sweep for HPU

Hawaii Pacific scored four second-inning runs on three hits, including a homer by Holly Garcia, and went on to beat Hawaii-Hilo, 4-2, for a sweep of their softball doubleheader yesterday at Hilo.

Lyrissa Sagawa, Ho'o Naki and Kristin Fujii homered as the Sea Warriors (14-7) won the opener, 7-1. UH-Hilo is 15-10.

UH diver 31st in meet

University of Hawaii diver J P Palmer placed 31st in the NCAA Zone E 3-meter event at Los Angeles last Saturday.

Brigham Young's Rachelle Kunkel was the winner.
