UH women place
sixth in water polo

The University of Hawaii women's water polo team split its final two matches in the Santa Barbara Women's Open yesterday and finished sixth in the 16-team tournament.

The seventh-ranked Wahine defeated host UC Santa Barbara, 9-7, with Robin Jones leading the UH attack with three goals.

No. 8-ranked Cal Davis then beat Hawaii, 9-5, in the match for fifth place. UH's Lisa De Rossi had three goals for the Wahine, whose season record is 8-4.

Cheer squads place

The Hawaii Cheer Company placed fourth in the senior large coed division at the NCA All-Star Championship in Dallas.

Hawaii scored 8.05 points. The winning team was Top Gun from Miami with 8.85 points.

The junior squad finished eighth in the coed division with 7.74 points. The Georgia All-Stars and Spirit of Texas tied for first with 8.67 points

The event, billed as the largest of its kind in the world, drew some 6,700 participants.

Jones keynote speaker

University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones is the keynote speaker at the American Red Cross Everyday Heroes Breakfast, March 4, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom.

The event recognizes 12 individuals who were nominated in community categories. The breakfast begins at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.

Crawford invited to train

The United States Professional Volleyball League's "Dream Team," with former University of Hawaii standout Therese Crawford, has been invited to train with and compete against the U.S. women's national team next month at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Tinman entry forms available

Entry forms for the April 1 Tinman Biathlon are available at most running and bike stores.

Entries for the 16th annual Tinman - a 2.7-mile run and 800-meter swim at Ala Moana Park - must be postmarked by March 20. The entry fee is $14. For more information, call Olga Caldwell, Tinman Unlimited, at 732-7311.

St. John's signs two

Two Hawaii high school volleyball players have signed letters of intent to play for St. John's next season.

Signing with the Red Storm are Roslyn Dang, a 5-foot-11 rightside hitter from Punahou, and Robyn Kurasaki a hitter/setter from Maryknoll School.
