There’s fire
in ‘Holy Smoke’

Holy Smoke is right. I didn't expect to see Kate Winslet walking toward Harvey Keitel in the Australian outback totally nude. Not that there's anything wrong with it. But that happens in "Holy Smoke," a most unusual love story. P.J. Walters (Keitel) plays an American deprogrammer, called to Australia to straightenMug shot out Ruth (Winslet), whose mind has been scrambled and captured by a guru during a visit to India. The American gunslinger has his hands full with the buxom beauty as they hole up alone for three days of treatment. But it becomes a torrid mental and sexual battle to see who wins. The audience is the real winner ... For a rollicking good time, go see Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry, one of TV's "Friends," in "The Whole Nine Yards." It's a riot. Willis is Jimmy the hit man who has moved next door to Oz the dentist, played by Perry. There are great twists and turns in this one ...

Cheers to Martin and Jeanie

Swiss Inn owners Martin and Jeanie Wyss celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary Monday. Jeanie, who handles the nightly and Sunday brunch crowds with her sister, Sharon Fujii, was a schoolteacher when she married then-Kahala Hilton chef Martin Wyss. They met through Jeanie's mom, Kumeko, now 87, a Kahala employee at the time. Swiss Inn regulars are crying in their soup over Jeanie's and Martin's plans to retire and close the Inn in October ... Kit Samson's group proved people want to dance to pop and swing music as crowds flocked to its guest nights at Hilton's Paradise Lounge last weekend. Danny Kaleikini sang a couple of numbers, one a duet with Al Romero ...

Ricky Martin was hot singing and dancing in a ring of fire during Wednesday's Grammys, but in no way did he match the volcanic heat generated by Jennifer Lopez when she walked on stage in a gown that barely covered her precious spots. Ricky will fire things up at Aloha Stadium March 26 ... Fashions by Eric Chandler and Takeo will be shown at Travel Women, Hawaii's scholarship luncheon fashion show, Sunday, March 5 at the Sheraton Waikiki. "Baywatch" regular Jason Momoa and Miss Teen hawaii Aureana Tseu will take part. Call 566-2303 for $40 tickets ...

Former isle deejay Kamasami Kong, aka Robert Zix, popped into town yesterday from Japan and, being a burger lover, headed straight for Kua 'Aina. Kong, who has a radio show in Osaka, said he was asked by reggae singer Maxie Priest to discuss a possible musical collaboration with Hoku Ho, Don Ho's daughter. After his burger, Kong was off to visit Frank B. Shaner. He'll also see other friends, Robin Mann and Gaylord holomalia, and his daughter, Nani Zix ... Carla Beachcomber Lutz will be in Alaska's Iditarod activities next Saturday. Carla will be on a dog sled for two hours as the mushers drive their dogs from Anchorage to the race's official start in Wasilla. Carla says it isn't just a sleigh ride. "I'll have to help untangle the dogs if necessary," she said by phone ...

That's a break

No dancing or golf for me for awhile. The heavy glass platter in my microwave slipped out and fell on my big toe, breaking the toe at the joint. Ouch! Dr. Daven Chun sent me to bone specialist Dr. Sydney Smith, who said it was a good, clean break, no surgery needed. The moral here is, don't be clumsy. But if you do break something, make sure it's good and clean. Bah! ...
