Wahine second in WAC
swim championships

The University of Hawaii women's swimming and diving team slipped into second place yesterday after the second day of the Western Athletic Championships at San Antonio.

The best finish for a Wahine was by senior JP Palmer, who placed third in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving.

SMU leads the meet with 326 points to Hawaii's 251. SMU also heads the men's competition with 312 points. Hawaii is third with 76.

Division II men's basketball

ALASKA ANCHORAGE 78, BYU-HAWAII 64:

At Anchorage, Greg Freeman scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out six assists as the Seawolves (16-9, 5-6 Pacific West Conference) toppled the Sea-siders.

David Evans led BYUH (17-7, 10-3) with 18 points.

ALASKA FAIRBANKS 75, HAWAII PACIFIC 55:

At Fairbanks, Sanjey Noriega had 19 points and four teammates also scored in double figures as the Wolves (14-12, 8-3 Pacific West Conference) beat the Sea Warriors (12-13, 6-7). Scott Kato had 15 points and eight rebounds for HPU.



UH water polo team loses

Sophomore Aniko Pelle scored six goals as second-ranked USC defeated No. 7 Hawaii, 13-7, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at Los Angeles.

The victory was the ninth in 10 matches for the Women of Troy, who are 4-0 in MPSF play.

Karin Umemura scored three goals for the Wahine (6-2, 1-2).

Academic honors for Howard

Raylene Howard, a senior forward for the University of Hawaii women's basketball team, has been selected to the GTE Kodak District VIII Academic All-America second team.

It is the second consecutive second-team award for Howard, who has a 3.45 cumulative grade-point average in secondary education. Howard, the conference scoring leader with a 17.1 average, has earned all-WAC academic honors the past three seasons.

Clay wins pentathlon

Kailua's Bryan Clay, a sophomore at Azusa Pacific, upset favored Darren Youngstrom to win the pentathlon at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships yesterday in Lincoln, Neb.

The second-seeded Clay, a Castle High School graduate, scored 3,960 points. He has qualified the U.S. National Indoor Championships meet next week.

Clay won the Pan Am Junior Games decathlon gold medal last year in Florida.

Miller Player of Week

Greg Miller, a former Hawaii high school state basketball player of the year from Kalaheo, was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week ending Feb. 19.

Miller, a 6-foot-7 senior center at Chico State, led the Wildcats to conference wins over Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Stanislaus. He had a combined 38 points and 18 rebounds in the two victories. Miller played one season for the University of Hawaii before transferring.
