Chain of Craters Road closed by earthquakes

HILO -- A swarm of shallow earthquakes southeast of Kilauea volcano lasting for about four hours yesterday ended without a new eruption, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

The activity was centered at Pauahi Crater, about four miles from Kilauea, and the earthquakes took place at depths of one-half mile to one mile.

A Hawaii Volcanoes National park statement said the activity indicated underground movement of magma into the area.

The park closed the Chain of Craters Road, which passes the area, and nearby hiking trails for the night.

Park official Nori Judd said people on a park tour of a lava-tube cave felt a strong jolt just as the tour was getting started, and also heard rocks breaking. The tour was cancelled.

The observatory said the earthquakes began at 1:42 p.m.

Feds grant $2.1 million to help Molokai youths

The federal government has awarded $2.1 million to help youths in economically depressed Molokai.

The money will create 32 positions to operate programs to help youths become ready to work or enter college, said Karen Holt, executive director of Molokai Community Services Council.

Holt said money will also go toward encouraging youths to become entrepreneurs.

As a federally designated enterprise community, Molokai has qualified to apply for a number of grants for poor communities, including the $2.1 million for the Molokai Youth Opportunity Program.

Molokai has the highest unemployment rate of any island in the state -- 11.4 percent in December 1999, according to state labor officials.

Big Isle cable company regrets X-rated video

HILO -- A Big Island cable television company has issued a public apology for showing an explicit, X-rated video during a weather forecast last Friday.

The video showing people committing sexual acts aired for about 15 minutes on the Weather Channel 37 of Hawaiian Cable Vision of Hilo at about 7 p.m., while the sound system gave a weather report.

Lorene Hough, general manager of the company, said the company has about 19,000 customers and received 46 complaints.

The incident occurred when the company was adding equipment and the work crew accidentally crossed wires, she said.

"We cannot apologize enough for what happened. It was human error," Hough said.
