It’s all good for Baldwin

Jon Garcia has been around Baldwin High School athletics for 28 years -- first as a basketball coach, then the past 14 years as athletic director.

But never has he -- or the Wailuku community, for that matter -- experienced anything like the success the Bears enjoyed over the past weekend.

"Not at all, not even close," Garcia said, when asked if anything could compare with winning the Maui Interscholastic League basketball championship on Friday night, and the state championships in girls' soccer and swimming on Saturday, as well as the MIL wrestling crown.

Also, earlier this month, the boys' soccer team and girls' softball team advanced to state semifinals.

"Another year in the early '90s we were named Athletic School of the Year by KHON," Garcia said. "But we had a select group of athletes who all played three sports. Never before have we had so many kids in different winter sports dominate the league."

Ex-Trojan makes history:

Alissa Schneider, a former Mililani swimmer now competing for Juniata College in Pennsylvania, won the school's first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference individual swimming championship Friday night.

Schneider took the gold in the 400-yard individual medley. with a time of 4:50.

Athletes of the Week

Alana Souza

Cheyne Bloch
BALDWIN

Honor Roll

Outstanding performers in high school sports last week included:

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Bullet Maulia LaBarre, Roosevelt: The 6-foot-7 center scored nine points, and had nine rebounds and four blocks Friday as the Rough Riders upset Radford's Rams, 53-46 for Roosevelt's first-ever Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball championship.

Bullet Ryan Saito, Punahou: The 6-foot junior guard scored all six of his points in overtime as the Buffanblu beat Kamehameha's Warriors, 64-56, Friday. The victory earned Punahou a chance to defend its state championship of 1999 this week.

PADDLING

Bullet Erica Lacaden, Tia Ikeno, Nash Souza, Quinten Kahele, Tuan Nguyen and Lena Roberts, Kaimuki: The Bulldogs' mixed varsity crew won at the Oahu Interscholastic Association championships on Saturday at Keehi Lagoon. The victory helped Kaimuki capture the Tesoro Cup, symbolizing the league's overall championship.

Bullet Chauna Omoso, Kayna Rodrigues, William Carroll III, William Pauso, Xan Nguyen and Nalani Nunes, Kaimuki: The Bulldogs' mixed junior varsity team finished the OIA season as the only unbeaten crew, going 5-0.

BOYS' SOCCER

Bullet Andrew Brown, Mililani: The senior goalkeeper for the Trojans was named the Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year. Considered the top goalie in the state, he is now eligible for national honors.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Bullet Robyn deHay, Kamehameha: The senior striker, who is headed for Stanford, was named the Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year after another 20-goal season. She is now eligible for national honors.

Bullet Kim Kawahara and Mahia Atay, Baldwin: Combined for eight saves as Baldwin blanked Pearl City, 1-0, in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Girls State Soccer Championship.

BOYS SWIMMING

Bullet Caleb Rowe, Baldwin: Won the 200 individual medley (1:54.02) and the 100 breaststroke (57.51), and swam on two winning relay teams as the Bears won the Local Motion State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Bullet Nick Borreca, Punahou: Took the 200 freestyle (1:42.11) and 500 freestyle (4:38.82), and swam the anchor leg (Shun Okatomi, Nick Tyau and Grant Chang preceded him) on the record-breaking 200 freestyle relay (1:28.38) as the Buffanblu finished second at the state meet.

GIRLS' SWIMMING

Bullet Ashley Swart, Kaiser: Was the only individual female multiple winner at the state meet, winning the 200 freestyle (1:53.77) and 500 freestyle (5:04.62), both junior national qualifying times.

BOYS' WRESTLING

Bullet Gerald Welch, St. Louis: The University of Hawaii football-signee became only the third athlete to ever win four-consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu wrestling championships on Saturday at Punahou.

COACHING

Bullet Frank Baumholtz III, Pearl City: The Chargers boys' soccer head coach and girls' assistant stepped in for girls head coach Archie Chung, who was attending a funeral Friday, and led the Chargers to a 1-0 semifinal upset of top-seeded Kamehameha in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Girls State Soccer Championships.

BASEBALL

Batter Up!

Defending state champion Molokai is among the teams swinging into action tomorrow in the 13th annual Joey DeSa Memorial Baseball Tournament. The Farmers play Damien at Joey DeSa Field, Kailua hosts Kamehameha, Waianae visits Mid-Pacific and Roosevelt and St. Louis square off at Stevenson Intermediate. All games are at 3:30 p.m. The tournament continues Friday and Saturday, with the championship game at 2:30 p.m.

BOYS' WRESTLING

Can Iolani return to the top?

Iolani won seven straight state wrestling championships from 1988 to 1994. Kamehameha has won the past three titles. But the Raiders look like the favorite as the Data House State Wrestling Championships get underway Friday at Blaisdell Arena. St. Louis, which won back-to-back state titles in 1972 and 1973, could also make a run at the title.
