Model frolicked
with ‘talking’ dog

STRIKING local model Wana'au Watson has completed shooting on two national TV commercials, one for Bud Lite and the other for Taco Bell. The people making the second commercial even flew in the Chihuahua (with quarantine supervision) to star in the shot, which took place in a supposed nudist colony. Wana'au and the others weren't actually nude for the shooting, of course, but she did have to wear tiny floral pasties which won't been seen in the commercial ...

THERE was a time when the Irish more or less ruled Mug shoton St. Patrick's Day -- or at least thought they did. But now all these other things are being scheduled for Paddy's Day that have nothing to do with the Irish. Oh yes, the International Council of Shopping Centers is calling its March 17 program at the Halekulani "Green With Envy," and at least it's in the morning. They got self-described "futurist" Jim Dator as guest speaker, but someone has yet to advise me why a "futurist" wears a '60s haircut ... The East-West Center is calling its 40th anniversary dinner at the Hawaii Prince on March 17 "An International Affair," which could conceivably include the Irish ... And if you really want to stretch it, when San Francisco kumu hula Patrick Makuakane brings his company to perform at the Hawaii Theatre on March 17, he's calling it, "The Natives are Restless." Wait 'til he sees what's going on around the corner on Nuuanu Avenue that night -- "restless" will take on a whole new meaning ...

E! Gads!

WHEN E! Entertainment's Todd Newton arrived to shoot the hour-long special "Wild on Waikiki," he went somewhat astray. First, he ended up at Sea Life Park, which is far from Waikiki, but he wanted to shoot underwater and be sure of seeing something, so that's where he went. Newton donned a SeaWalker helmet for an underwater stroll and film shoot among the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, sharks and rays in the Reef Tank. The E! camera's audio cable malfunctioned in the water, but producer Silver Parker had thoughtfully concealed a mini-tape recorder inside Newton's helmet, to pick up his comments along the way. "Wild on Waikiki" -- and beyond -- will air beginning April 22 ...

THE benefit concert for Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, "Variety of Stars," is certainly well named. Set to appear at the Hawaii Theatre benefit March 10 is a lineup that includes Willie K and Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Kawai Cockett with the Lei Kukui Serenaders, Hula Joe and the Hut Jumpers, Sean Na'auao, Imua, Forte, 24VII Dance Force, Honolulu Men's Chorus, Randy & Gay Hongo, Miss Hawaii 1999 Candes Meijide Gentry and Ms. Plus Hawaii, Dolores Mark-Chambers. Hosts for the evening are Kimo Keawe and Linda Jameson and it's for a great cause ...

Re-fridging

IT was disconcerting to learn that my refrigerator died just as I was going to Kaiser Hospital for a procedure. It was like, "You won't be needing this anymore, so ..." But while my procedure went off without a hitch or a stitch, the fridge had to go. I stopped at Sears on Saturday morning, found one I wanted and it was delivered 24 hours later -- Sunday morning -- pretty remarkable and done so efficiently not a soul in my building was the slightest disturbed. Hats off to Sears ...
