Legislature 2000

Gambling bill
but a memory

Gambling this session may be dead, but not forgotten by its chief supporter, Rep. Jerry Chang (D, South Hilo).

After the House Democratic caucus decided to bottle up a bill to allow gambling on ships, Chang said the measure would have provided Hawaii with $40 million in new money.

The money would have been earmarked for public education, Chang said.

"Perhaps the greatest impact of the bill would be its commitment to developing and nurturing an educated citizenry," Chang said.
