Gov. Ben Cayetano and his special adviser for technology, Joseph Blanco, are leading a delegation of state and county leaders to Silicon Valley this week.

"This is a learning tour of the information technology industry," Cayetano said before leaving yesterday.

The group planned to get in-depth briefings from Oracle Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc. The delegation also was scheduled to meet with Xerox Corp. officials before the four-day trip ends Thursday. "We need to understand the convergence of data, video and voice in the technology industry to know how to create a niche for the private sector to capitalize on this convergence," Blanco said.

The delegation includes Sens. Carol Fukunaga, D-Ala Moana-Makiki-Tantalus, David Ige, D-Waimalu-Pearl City-Pacific Palisades, and Les Ihara, D-Kaimuki-Kapahulu-Waikiki; University of Hawaii President Kenneth Mortimer; Associate Judge Corinne Watanabe; and state Schools Superintendent Paul LeMahieu.

At the end of the trip Thursday, Cayetano will continue on to Washington to attend the Winter Meeting of the National Governors' Association. He is to return home Feb. 29.
