Unfortunately for Kamehameha, it is not enough to dominate play in soccer. You have to put the ball in the net.

In a stunning semifinal upset last night of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Girls' State Soccer Championships, Pearl City defeated top-seeded Kamehameha by outscoring the Warriors, 5-3, in penalty kicks after both teams held each other scoreless through two overtimes.

Pearl City (14-2-1) plays for its fifth state title against No. 3-seed Baldwin (14-0) tonight at 7:30. The Bears beat Aiea, 1-0, in the other semifinal.

The Chargers were without coach Archie Chung, who was dealing with a death in his family.

Associate coaches Frank Baumholtz and Tracee Kono ran the team.

Although the Warriors (10-2-2) controlled the ball the entire game -- outshooting the unseeded Chargers, 24-9 -- they could not get the ball by Charger goalkeeper Christine Ayers. Ayers stopped 11 shots.

The Warriors kept the ball on the Chargers' side of the field most of the game, even when they were forced to play more than half of the second period and all of both overtimes a player down. Senior forward Raine Arndt was assessed a red card at the 59:07 mark of the second half for throwing a retaliatory punch after she received a hard foul.

The game was very physical overall, with the teams combining for 55 fouls.

"Kamehameha is an all-star team; we're a community team. We tried to play our game whenever we got the ball, though it was difficult because they controlled it (the ball)," Baumholtz said. "But when we got our opportunities, they were great opportunities where we could have finished it."

Pearl City's Carmen Calpo missed two shots by inches.

"I thought I had it (the goals). I tried my best to get to the ball, but I just didn't have the extra boost," Calpo said.

BALDWIN 1, AIEA 0: Like the Warriors, the Bears dominated play, outshooting Na Alii, 30-6. But the Bears were able to capitalize, and Baldwin makes its first ever appearance in the state final.

Kalena Eaton scored the only goal at 26:19 of the first half. Eaton received a pass in front of the goal from Alana Souza after Souza controlled a corner kick.

"We need to win the ball and keep up our good passing. We expected to be in the final," Baldwin coach K. Kawika Keator said. "We've worked real hard and the ladies have stuck together the whole season."

Aiea dropped to 11-5-1.
