Family fun at
Lewers Lounge

AS pianist Noly Pa'a was about to take to the keyboard at the Halekulani's Lewers Lounge Valentine's Night, a sodden thought crossed my mind. If Branscombe Richmond were to have brought in his wife, former Miss Hawaii Lei Ma'a, as he sometimes does, we could have a reunion of the Ma'as and the Pa'as ... If not the parents, at least the brothers were on hand. The two bachelor brothers from Scotland, Noel and Alistair Mathew, who come to Hawaii each winter for four weeks, were in the Lounge, which they are nearly every night they're in Honolulu. Last year I happened to be there on their final night, and the musicians and waitresses heaped aloha presents on them, much to their undisguised pleasure ... And finally, that's a pyramid under construction at the front entrance of the Academy of Arts, a creation of the Academy's construction wizard, Fujio Kaneka. It'll be ready for the upcoming "Mystery of the Nile: Treasures of Ancient Egypt" exhibit, set to open March 16. Now if they'd just plant some proper flowers at the entrance we could have the Mummies and the Poppies. All right, I'll go to my room ...

THERE'LL be a whole lot of shakin' goin' on in Hilo this weekend. That's when the Tahiti Fete takes place (tomorrow through Sunday) at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium. It's based on the big July Festival in Tahiti and is a first for Hilo ...

Heartbreaker's ball

LEAVE it to noted divorce attorney Brad Coates to have some kind of party to celebrate Valentine's Day. This is the same guy who sends out Independence Day cards with a plug for his Mug shotbook, "Divorce With Dignity." But on the day devoted to lovers (and merchants who sell overpriced roses and candy to lovers), Coates had a "Heal the Hearts" party. He invited a couple of hundred of his former divorce clients, judges and court staffers, marriage counselors etc., and turned them all loose together in Oceans at Restaurant Row. It turned into a monster bash with a great many staying to party far past the announced closing at 8:30 p.m. ...

HONOLULU gets to see the sexiest and most liberating dancing ever when "Forever Tango 2000" opens an eight-performance run March 28 at the Hawaii Theater. I saw the show in December in San Francisco and it seemed to send everyone's body temperature up. When the original version opened there a few years ago and repeatedly extended its run, columnist Herb Caen itemed that when he saw "Forever Tango" on the marquee, he didn't know that was a description of how long the show would run ...

LOOKS like Oscar Fever has everyone's temperature rising. Joe Moore, ecstatic that grosses for his film, "Moonglow," went up during its second week of release locally, flatly states, "I won't be surprised if at this time next year Milo O'Shea is nominated for a "Best Actor" Oscar for his role in "Moonglow." He's very good, but it depends on how many Oscar voters get to see the film ...

Fit to be tied, loosely

SOME Ferns look better than others, and are pleasing to the eye no matter how large. So it is with Fern Bratten, who accepts that she's a size 20 and uses humor and levity to get other large women to adhere to her motto: "If you can't hide it, decorate it." Bratten, who's also a comic, will be at Liberty house Ala Moana Saturday at 1 and at the Pearlridge store Sunday at 1 to showcase her line of clothes for "full-figured women." ...
