Restaurateur Ed Wary plans to kick things up a notch with a second Auntie Pasto's to open by April in Kapahulu.

Plans for the restaurant, originally targeted for last June, were put on the back burner because of problems over city variances. Wary said construction is under way and the restaurant -- at 559 Kapahulu Avenue, the former site of the Internet Cafe -- will open in late March or early April.

"The whole idea is to take Auntie Pasto's . . . and bring it into the 21st century," he said.

The new look will include front and rear dining rooms with hardwood floors and a full bar. Also planned are high-backed, New York-style booths with curtains for privacy.

"When I do a restaurant I write down what all the rules are of designing a restaurant and then we go through them one by one to see how we can break them," Wary said.

The original Auntie Pasto's, which opened on the corner of Beretania and Pensacola streets in 1983, proved popular with its loud and unpretentious ambience and low-priced food.

The second, 3,500 square-foot restaurant will feature an expanded menu, Wary said.

One signature at the original restaurant -- wall menues in lieu of table menues -- will prevail at the new Auntie Pasto's, Wary said.
