UH’s Folker, Van Hoose,
Freas honored

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Hawaii men's swim team won the conference championship and swept the three top league honors yesterday.

Rainbow coach Sam Freas was named the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference's Coach of the Year while Nick Folker and Chris Van Hoose were named the top swimmer and diver, respectively. UH easily topped a field of 26 teams in the meet to remain unbeaten on the season.

The Rainbows finished with 819 points Saturday after setting 13 conference records and four school marks in the competition. Cal State Bakersfield was second with 628 points and UC San Diego third with 516.

Folker won the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and swam on the Rainbows' winning 200 free, 200 medley and 400 free relay team.

Van Hoose won the 3-meter diving event and placed second behind teammate Eddie Stevens in the 1-meter.

Freas said eight of his swimmers have qualified for the national championship meet.

The Rainbows host the King Kalakaua Invitational at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday.

The UH women's team, also unbeaten, will compete in the WAC Championships at San Antonio Feb. 24-26.

Girls' State soccer matchups

Four matches Wednesday at Aloha Stadium will kick off the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Girls State Soccer Tournament. The four top seeds - Kamehameha, Moanalua, Baldwin and Hawaii Prep - drew byes into Thursday's quarterfinals.

First-round pairings have Kapaa facing Castle at 1:30 p.m., Waiakea against Aiea at 3:30, Mililani versus Kealakehe at 5:30, and Pearl City- Maui at 7:30.

The quarterfinals will be played at the same times Thursday. The semifinals are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday. The championship match is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Seniors sparkle at the net

Alex Roth took the Ala Moana Seniors Tournament men's 80 years title with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Rennie Thomas in yesterday's final at Diamond Head Tennis Center.

Thomas came back with partner Maurice Howard to win the men's 80 doubles final, 6-1, 6-1, over Joe Gladstone and Dick Nakasone.

Grand Slam surfing finale

The fourth and final event in the inaugural Asahi Grand Slam of Surfing was scheduled to start today - conditions permitting - at the Banzai Pipeline.

The meet's waiting period runs through Feb. 25.

Junior golf qualifying play

Qualifying for the 2000 boys and girls USGA Junior golf championship will take place June 29-30 at the Waikoloa Kings course on the Big Island. with a practice round on June 28.

The qualifier is open to boys and girls who have not reached their 18th birthdays by this Aug. 6, and have a handicap not exceeding 6.4 for boys and 18.4 for girls under the USGA handicap index.

The national championship will be played July 31-Aug. 5 in Oregon.
