Rainbows’ outside shots
bring down Matadors

From staff and wire reports

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Hawaii men's volleyball team turned itself inside-out last night en route to a way to a hard-earned three-game sweep of Cal State Northridge.

Outside hitters Clay Stanley and Costas Theocharidis took the biggest swings for the No. 6 Rainbows, combining for 40 kills, in a 15-13, 15-7, 15-12 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over the Matadors.

With its second road win in two nights, UH ran its season record to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in MPSF play.

Cal State Northridge is 2-4 and 1-4.

"Clay and Costas were both real big for us tonight," said UH coach Mike Wilton. "The Northridge guys saw us play last night (a three-game victory at Loyola Marymount) and knew how good Brenton (Davis) and Torry (Tukuafu) were hitting in the middle.

"They concentrated on stopping us there so we set the ball outside for Clay and Costas and they came through in a big way."

Stanley had 23 kills and a pair of service aces. Theocharidis had 17 kills and also came up with 10 digs on defense.

It was no stroll in the park for the 'Bows, who trailed, 5-0, in game one and were down, 9-4, when Wilton burned his second timeout.

"Then we gradually got it going," he said. "They're a good team, I think, and we were just good enough to win tonight. I guess I should be grateful for that."

Wilton sees trouble ahead at Santa Barbara, where the 'Bows wind up the trip tomorrow against UCSB, unless they raise the level of their game.

"We won our first two, and that's great," he said. "But I think we need to make a big quantum leap against a team that traditionally plays us very tough up here."

The Gauchos (4-2) are No. 14 in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches rankings. They were 4-0 before bowing to Cal Baptist and Pacific in their last two matches.
