UH men dive into early
lead at Long Beach

Divers Eddie Stevens, Chris Van Hoose and Josh Gonzalez gave the Hawaii men's swimming and diving team the early lead in the 2000 Pacific Swim Conference Championships at Long Beach, Calif.

The three Rainbows finished first, second and sixth, respectively, in the one-meter dive, the only event scheduled for the first day of the four-day competition.

That gave Hawaii a 38 point lead in the field of 26 schools that compete in the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference in all three NCAA divisions.

Tennessee tramples UH-Hilo

Chris Burke tied a Tennessee baseball record with six hits and the Vols pounded 23 on the way to an 18-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo last night on the Big Island.

Burke was 6-for-6, with an inside-the-park homer, a double and four singles. In his seventh at-bat, he drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Vols (6-1) and Vulcans (7-10) were to wind up their seven game series with a doubleheader today.

$4,200 raised for junior golfers

The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association's Chip-In fund-raiser, held during the recent Sony Open in Hawaii and sponsored in part by Waialae Country Club, brought in $4,200.

Some 600 participants donated $10 for one ball or $20 for three to chip through the "June Jones" uprights. Those that made it through were entered in daily drawings and a grand-prize drawing.

Grand-prize winner Dean Kaya received a free round of golf with two friends and Hawaii football coach Jones, plus two nights' accommodations at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel and a $250 gift certificate for the Waialae C.C. golf shop.
